Making a difference begins in the minds of enthusiasts from all situations – public schools, math and science schools, art schools, and even home schools. As FIRST Team Chaos, we defy many challenges in order to make that difference. Our FIRST team is open to any student from Pearl River County, Mississippi no matter the distance. This can be a daunting task since the county has three school districts and covers over eight hundred square miles of thin population. But thanks to our efforts, every school in the county is involved in FIRST. By driving twenty-five miles or more from their homes, the students of Team Chaos have shown indisputable commitment.
So when we say we are an enthusiastic team, we mean it; and for those who believe that only “the biggest” can become the best, FIRST’s Team 1421 has been proving that belief wrong from the start.
While in previous years we have visited the Mississippi state legislators to educate them about the goals of FIRST, the team realized we must start by educating our community. That is why the team sponsors four FLL teams and executes plenty of demonstrations at elementary schools. In 2012, Team Chaos is finally beginning to realize its primary goal; we influence elementary students, which will heighten the high school graduation rate of sixty-eight percent by encouraging an uprising of passionate study. This will ultimately increase the county’s college education rate of 14.6 percent, which is lower than the state average of 19.2 percent. It takes big hearts for a small team to step up and challenge these statistics, but through the years Team 1421 has proved its great joy in defying the norm of their generation again and again.
